OGHSFL - New Teams

The On Guard High School Fencing League of Georgia is always ready to have new fencing teams and/or new fencing clubs join our league. High School fencing in Georgia is rapidly growing with new schools being added regularly.

Fencing is not currently designated as a varsity sport in Georgia high schools by the GHSA. So, in most cases, the high school will refer to the activty as a "fencing club". However, many high schools allow students to earn "letters" for club activities (e,g, band, drama, chorus, etc), and your school may also allow fencers to earn high school letters.

In order to start a new high school fencing team in Georgia, or a new high school fencing club, there are a few steps you should take:

  • Contact the On Guard High School Fencing League of Georgia by sending an email to OnGuardHSFL@gmail.com
  • Contact your high school administration to get the details of how new clubs are started at your high school.
  • Identify a faculty/staff sponsor, if such is required for your high school to have an official club.
  • Identify an available fencing coach. The On Guard HS Fencing League can help you find one.
  • Identify an available facility at which to practice. Members of our league currently practice at nearby churches, middle schools, high school gymnasiums/aux gyms/cafeterias, etc.)
  • Fill out the On Guard "School Participation" form (see the Forms Page) and send it in.
  • Pay the League dues (currently $200 plus $7/fencer for insurance).
  • Send in your team roster for the next tournament, and start fencing!

The On Guard High School Fencing League of Georgia is working towards GHSA sanctioning to make fencing a varsity sport in Georgia high schools. The more clubs, schools, and teams that participate, the more likely this will happen.
